Car warranty "final notice" scam

These calls and texts say your vehicle warranty is about to expire and urge you to renew right away by phone with your card ready.

How this scam works

The sellers are not your car maker or dealer. They push you into pricey service contracts or take your card details.

Common versions of the message

  • A final notice about your warranty
  • A same-day deadline
  • A request to have your card ready

What the message looks like

Text from +1 (555) 017-4483

FINAL NOTICE: Your vehicle warranty expires today. Act now to avoid paying for costly repairs yourself. Call (555) 017-4483 to renew and have your card number ready.

Fictional example based on common, publicly reported scam patterns.

The red flags

  1. 1

    Fake urgency: “FINAL NOTICE”

Your real dealer does not text final notices like this

Your real dealer or car maker does not send final notices like this.

  2. 2

    Rushed deadline: “expires today”

Pressure so you call before checking

    The same-day deadline is pressure.

  3. 3

Card ready: “have your card number ready”

They want your card before you can think

Asking for your card up front is how they lock you in before you think.

What to do

  • Do not call back or share card details.
  • Check your warranty with your dealer or car maker directly.
  • Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) and delete it.

If you already replied, clicked, or paid

  • If you paid, call your card issuer and ask about disputing the charge.
  • Ask for the contract in writing and check your cancellation rights.
  • Add your number to the Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov.
