Fake customer support number scam

Scammers post fake support numbers for banks, payment apps, airlines, and tech companies in search results and social media. When you call, they ask for codes or remote access to "fix" your problem.

How this scam works

Once they have your code or see your screen, they take over your account or move your money.

Common versions of the message

  • A support number found by searching
  • A request for your sign-in code
  • An app to share your screen

What the message looks like

Text from Support agent

Thanks for calling Cash App support. To fix your refund I need you to verify your account. Please read me the sign-in code we just sent and install AnyDesk so I can see your screen.

Fictional example based on common, publicly reported scam patterns.

The red flags

  1. 1

Code request: “read me the sign-in code”

Real support never asks for your sign-in code

Real support teams never ask for your sign-in code.

  2. 2

    Remote access: “install AnyDesk”

This gives them control of your phone or computer

Remote access apps give a stranger control of your device.

  3. 3

    Screen sharing: “see your screen”

They watch you log in to your bank

Screen sharing lets them watch you log in to your bank.

What to do

  • Find support numbers inside the company's own app or on its official website.
  • Never share codes or install apps for a support agent who called you or whom you found by searching.
  • Hang up if anyone asks for remote access.

If you already replied, clicked, or paid

  • If you installed a remote access app, uninstall it and disconnect from the internet.
  • Change passwords from a different device, starting with email and banking.
  • Call your bank using the number on your card.
