Vacation rental scam: paying outside the app
Scammers copy real vacation rental listings, then ask you to pay outside the booking site for a "discount", often by wire or a payment app.
How this scam works
Once you pay outside the app, you lose its payment protection. The listing may not exist or may belong to someone else.
Common versions of the message
- A discount for paying off the app
- A wire or payment-app deposit
- Other families waiting
What the message looks like
Text from Host: Mark
The beach house is available for your dates! We give a 15% discount if you pay outside of the app. Please wire the full $2,400 deposit today and I will email you the door code. Several families are interested.
Fictional example based on common, publicly reported scam patterns.
The red flags
- 1
Off the app: “pay outside of the app”
You lose all protection outside the booking site
Booking sites protect you only when you pay inside them.
- 2
Wire it today: “wire the full $2,400 deposit today”
Wires are almost impossible to get back
Wired money is almost impossible to get back.
- 3
Fake demand: “Several families are interested”
Pressure so you pay before checking
Claims of other interested families are there to rush you.
What to do
- Book and pay only inside the booking app or site.
- Report hosts who ask you to pay outside it.
- Do a reverse image search on the photos if a listing looks too cheap.
If you already replied, clicked, or paid
- If you wired money, call your bank right away and ask them to recall the wire.
- Report it to the booking site and at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- Do not send more money for "fees" or "damage deposits".
