Marketplace "click to receive payment" scam

When you sell something online, a buyer says they already paid through a delivery or escrow service and sends a link where you enter your card to "receive" the money.

How this scam works

The link is a fake payment page. Entering your card lets the scammer spend your money.

Common versions of the message

  • A buyer who already paid
  • A courier or delivery service
  • A link that asks for your card and CVV

What the message looks like

Text from Marketplace buyer

I'll take the dresser for full price! I already paid through the safe delivery service and a courier will pick it up. Click this link to receive your money, just enter your card number and CVV: http://secure-pay-receive.top/claim

Fictional example based on common, publicly reported scam patterns.

The red flags

  1. 1

    Fake service: “safe delivery service”

The buyer invented this to look official

The delivery service is invented to sound official.

  2. 2

Link to get paid: “Click this link to receive your money”

You never need a link to receive money

You never need to click a link to receive money.

  3. 3

Asks for your card: “enter your card number and CVV”

This lets them spend your money

Your card number and CVV are for spending, not receiving.

  4. 4

    Fake site: “secure-pay-receive.top”

It copies a payment page to steal card details

The page copies a real payment site to look safe.

What to do

  • Do not click the link or enter any card details.
  • Only accept payment in person or inside the marketplace.
  • Report the buyer to the marketplace.

If you already replied, clicked, or paid

  • If you entered card details, call the number on your card right away and ask for a new card.
  • If you entered a bank login, change it and call your bank.
  • Watch your statements for charges you do not recognize.
